Sherry and Its International Importance

Sherry

If you're looking to recall stories, if you're looking to remember moments, do it in the company of a unique wine, Sherry. A magical place where some of the world's most exclusive wines are produced.

Bodegas Lustau

At MadeInSpain.store we have selected one of the oldest wineries in the Jerez geographical region (Cádiz), Bodegas Lustau. It was founded in 1896, in the 19th century, by Don José Ruiz-Berdejo. It is the only winery that produces wines in all three towns of the Marco: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. To this day, they are dedicated to producing Premium wines. Among the most internationally awarded Spanish wineries, Lustau’s philosophy has remained the same since its origin: to create products of the highest and recognisable quality, and to offer consumers the broadest and most select collection of Jerez specialities. Over these 120 years of history, they have sought to offer their loyal customers the broadest and most select collection of Jerez specialities: oloroso wines, amontillados, palo cortado, fino, manzanilla, Pedro Ximénez and moscatel. Bodegas Lustau is considered today a worldwide reference when talking about top-quality wines. In recent years Lustau has been awarded numerous international prizes. It was the first winery in the world to receive the prestigious Len Evans trophy twice for its quality and consistency, in 2011 and 2016, from the renowned International Wine Challenge.

Best Winery in Jerez

One of the notable awards for this house, granted in London by the International Wine & Spirit Competition, was Best Spanish Winery of 2011 and Best Winery of Jerez in 2014 and 2016. I assure you that it is by no means easy to be nominated and then win. Since it is a winery that, of course, makes exciting wines and shares the same philosophy as our company, this pleases us and excites us to share it with you. Joining these fellow travellers of this caliber is extremely easy, and it is more than pleasant to be able to travel the world with them.

Sweet "fortified" wines

The sweet «fortified» wines called dessert wines became very popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in the Anglo-Saxon market. Even today the main markets to which these wines are exported are the British and colonial markets. It is really the people there who appreciate these magical and prestigious wines. In Spain, people know them, but they don’t drink them. Like what happens to many great national products. Or if they do, it is usually on a special date, that is, on rare occasions throughout the year. Outside Andalusia, in very few areas of Spain can we enjoy a glass of Jerez wine properly. Sad to say, but true. Spanish fortified wines, the sweet wines, particularly those from Jerez and from Tenerife, began to be regularly shipped to the warehouses of American merchants once the independence of the Thirteen Colonies ended. By that time, the international market already loved Sherry wine. They quickly realized it could be a good business to market a wine unique in the world. Australians tried to copy the Jerez style and put labels on the market calling it “Australian sherry,” but once tasted against an authentic must aged under its enigmatic Velo de Flor, the end consumer sees that they cannot be compared — nor do they resemble each other in quality.

Andalusia’s most famous wines

Over the course of history, the aromas and flavors of Andalusia’s most famous wines left a mark on illustrious figures in poetry, music and sculpture of international renown. At the end of his pleasure trip to Jerez in 1809, Lord Byron recounts his experience in the city in a letter to his mother: At Xeres, where the sherry we drink is made”. The Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, in his book “A Visit to Spain” (1863), also refers to Jerez wines and describes the beauty of the city. But without a doubt the most famous reference is that of the greatest English writer of all time, Willam Shakespeare, who said: “Sherry clears the head, warms the blood, and gives courage to the heart.”
