Red wine, Tempranillo-Merlot Crianza Dominio Mateos de la Higuera, Bodega Vega de Mara

Dominio Mateos de la Higuera – Vega Demara Tempranillo Merlot Crianza is a red wine from the La Mancha Designation of Origin, made from Tempranillo and Merlot grapes from estate-owned vineyards planted since 1976, set on stony-limestone soils that provide structure, freshness, and a smooth, creamy texture.

The grapes are hand-harvested at their optimal point of ripeness and transported in crates to prevent damage and preserve their integrity. The fruit is then carefully selected before being transferred to the fermentation tanks, where the wine is vinified at a controlled temperature using advanced oenological techniques that respect varietal expression.

Ageing

The wine ages for six months in French and American oak barrels. During this period it develops complex spicy (eugenol) and toasted (furfural) notes that integrate with the red and black fruit of the Tempranillo. American oak adds hints of vanilla and coconut, achieving a balanced, elegant, and harmonious whole.

Tasting notes

It shows an intense deep cherry color. On the nose, aromas of red and forest fruits predominate; with aeration, notes of licorice appear, along with a soft spicy and toasted background. On the palate it offers a smooth yet powerful entry, with high intensity and excellent harmony between ripe fruit and the toasted, spicy, and vanilla notes from oak ageing.

It is a wine with ageing potential, which can evolve very positively over time.

Pairing

Ideal with stews, grilled meats (lamb and kid goat), baked fish, casseroles, red meats, and aged or semi-aged cheeses.

Recommended serving temperature: 14 ºC – 16 ºC.

Vega Demara

Vega Demara | Tradition, origin, and evolution

The story of Vega Demara begins in 1946, when the Mateos de la Higuera family acquired its first Tempranillo vineyard in the Mara Antona area. With Grandfather Joaquín’s enthusiasm and vision, a winemaking adventure began, marked by hard work, perseverance, and deep respect for the land.

After decades devoted to vine growing, the family consolidated its project with a clear philosophy: the quality of wine begins in the vineyard. For this reason, from the outset, their wines have been made exclusively with grapes from their own vineyards, ensuring full control of the process and the authentic expression of the La Mancha terroir.

In 2005, the family fulfilled another of its great dreams by producing its first wine, the result of an ambitious vineyard restructuring project. This process combined the recovery of old Tempranillo vineyards with the introduction of improving varieties, always respecting the character and identity of the area.

In recent years, the Mateos de la Higuera Brothers have begun a new chapter, modernizing both their image and their facilities. Under the commercial name Vega Demara, the winery has launched a carefully curated range of wines produced both under the Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla label and with the La Mancha Designation of Origin, reaffirming its commitment to quality and origin.

Thanks to this evolution, Vega Demara has achieved strong international reach, with a presence in the main European markets as well as in China, Brazil, and the United States. This expansion reflects the balance achieved between the tradition inherited from parents and grandparents and the modern winemaking techniques made possible by today’s technology.

Vega Demara is the result of more than six decades of passion for viticulture, a family project that brings together history, innovation, and respect for the land to offer honest, expressive wines that remain true to their origin.
