Designation of O

What is the Protected Designation of Origin?

The Protected Designation of Origin, or P.D.O., is a regulated quality seal that guarantees a product has been made following a specific procedure in a specific region. This ensures exclusive, consistent quality across all products sharing the same Designation of Origin. Regarding Iberian shoulders and hams, from animals that comply with Iberian pig regulations, there are only 4 in the world.

  • P.D.O. Guijuelo: located in Salamanca.
  • P.D.O. Los Pedroches: from the province of Córdoba.
  • P.D.O. Jabugo: from the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche, in Huelva.
  • P.D.O. Dehesa de Extremadura: where the one million hectares of dehesa we have in Extremadura are an ecological paradise for our pigs.

Juan Pedro Domecq

In 1730, the Domecq family arrived in Spain. It is a surname closely linked to the production of high-quality foods and wines, such as sherry and brandies. This know-how has been passed down from parents to children, always accompanied by their second passion: raising free-range animals, such as 100% Iberian pigs.

In 1970, Juan Pedro Domecq Solís began breeding 100% Iberian pigs on his Seville estate, Lo Álvaro. In an ambitious quest to create the most exquisite ham, Juan Pedro relied on different studies carried out in collaboration with several Spanish universities. The result is found in a unique variety: the 100% Iberian hairless marmellado pig.

In 2000, with the support of his son Juan Pedro Domecq Morenés, he launched a product of excellent quality, backed by all his experience in raising 100% Iberian pigs.

In 2019, their products could be found from China to Mexico, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and the Caribbean, as well as throughout the European Union, and they hope to continue expanding into new markets, including the United States together with Made in Spain Gourmet.
