Original Made in Spain 2025

It is one of the winery’s most representative wines. We could call it a premium white. Very classy and produced in very limited quantities.
Technical Sheet

Winery: Estate vineyards, Ponferrada (El Bierzo). Hand-harvested.
D.O.: El Bierzo
Alcohol: 14%
Variety: 100% Godello

Tasting note: Yellow in color, with greenish hues, clean and bright. On the nose it is intense and clean, with aromas of ripe fruit, and a background of white flowers and honey. On the palate it is round, fresh, full-bodied, balanced, with good structure and a long finish.

Serving temperature: 6-8ºC

Winemaking: Production of 2,000 bottles, made by hand.

Six-hour skin maceration at 8 degrees Celsius to extract the maximum aromatic fraction. 24-hour settling until achieving a clarity of 60 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). Fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks and, after 48 hours, the wine is racked into new 500-liter French oak barrels. 14 days of fermentation at 18ºC. Aged on its own lees for 9 months.

Pairing: at Made in Spain Gourmet, we recommend pairing it with creamy and semi-cured cheeses, white meats, and fish. We also love it with Foie Gras entier by El Greco.

D.O. Bierzo (Designation of Origin)

The Bierzo region is located in the northwest of the province of León, within the Autonomous Community of Castile and León, and covers an area of 2,954.28 kilometers, representing 18% of the provincial surface area. Geographically, it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo, and Asturias and serves as a communication hub between Galicia, León, and Asturias. It has a distinctive Mediterranean microclimate, with milder temperatures than neighboring areas, and its low altitude generally prevents late frosts, which is highly favorable for the grape harvest, usually taking place one month earlier than in the rest of Castile and La Rioja.

Extreme temperatures occur in winter and summer, with an average of 12.3ºC, minimum averages of 3.6º in the cold months, and highs of 23.6º in the warmest months.

Rainfall is around 721 mm in an average year. Average annual sunshine is estimated at 2,100 to 2,200 hours throughout the year.

In El Bierzo, vineyards are primarily planted on moist brown earth soils, slightly acidic and therefore free of carbonates, typical of humid climates.

The acidity level ranges from 4 to 8.5; in the valleys, values above 6 predominate.

The key quality factors are found on gently sloping terraces where vineyards lie very close to the rivers, on semi-terraced hillsides, or in steeply sloped vineyards at altitudes between 450 and 1,000 meters.

Grape varieties

El Bierzo is a fertile land where different grape varieties are grown, all adapted to the characteristics of the soils and climate. Wines protected by the Designation of Origin must be made exclusively from the following varieties: Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera, Godello, Doña Blanca, and Palomino.

Mencía

The main red variety of Bierzo, representing 74.5% of the grapes grown in the production area. A low-yielding variety, with early budbreak and early ripening. The cluster is small and medium-compact. The berries are medium-sized, uniform, and blue-black in color. The pulp has no coloration.

Garnacha Tintorera

A red variety representing 2% of the grapes grown in the production area. It is also known as Alicante Bouschet. A low-yielding variety, with early budbreak and medium-early ripening. The cluster is large and medium-compact. The berries are medium-sized, uniform, and blue-black in color. The pulp pigmentation is strong and reddish in color.

Estaladiña

Less than 2 ha planted. Also called Pan y Carne. Early budbreak and veraison, early ripening. It is a medium-yielding variety. The cluster is small, with small blue-black berries. The pulp shows no coloration.

Merenzao

Between 2 and 3 ha planted. Known as María Ordoña or Bastardo. A medium-yielding variety, with medium budbreak and early ripening. The cluster is small, with medium-large blue-black berries; the pulp shows no coloration.

Godello

A white variety adapted to the terrain and slopes of Bierzo. It represents 4% of the grapes grown in the production area. A low-yielding variety, with early budbreak and early ripening. The cluster is small to medium-sized and compact. The berries are small, uniform, and green-yellow in color. Pulp pigmentation is absent or very weak.

Doña Blanca

A white variety. It represents 2.4% of the grapes grown in the production area. It is also known as Valenciana. A medium-yielding variety, with medium-late budbreak and early ripening. The cluster is medium-sized and compact. The berries are medium-sized, uniform, and green-yellow in color. Pulp pigmentation is absent or very weak.

Palomino

A white variety. It represents 17% of the grapes grown in the production area. Also known as Jerez or Listán. A productive variety, with medium budbreak and medium ripening. The cluster is medium-large and medium-compact. The berries are medium-sized, uniform, and green-yellow in color. The pulp is uncolored.

Malvasía

A white variety. It represents 0.1% of the grapes grown in the production area. A low-vigor variety, with early budbreak and early ripening. The cluster is medium-sized and medium-compact. The berries are medium-sized, uniform, and green-yellow in color. The pulp is uncolored.

Almazcara-Majara

Back in 2002, Javier Álvarez had the idea of creating a winery in the Bierzo DO with several aims in mind: to make a wine meant to be enjoyed, to promote the El Bierzo region, and, most importantly, to have a wonderful time bringing the project to life. Together with his childhood friend Manuel Benito Otero and his friend Raúl García, the Almázcara Majara winery was born. Its name comes from the village where the winery is located, the place Javier Álvarez’s family is from, and from the first letters of the partners’ names: Ma-Ja-Ra. The Bierzo region is located in the northwest of the province of León. So reads the catalog of this young winery named Almázcara Majara, where they express not only their passion for wine but also their passion for life and for the good moments enjoyed over a glass of wine. The result of putting passion into a wine is a striking image, rounded wines with all the flavor of the starring grape, modern labels, a modern winery, and a commitment to bringing the land closer to everyone who wants to discover a little piece of it: young people, wine lovers, fans of original things, and those who enjoy good moments around the table, food, fine wine, and good friends. Their hallmark is careful, affectionate craftsmanship in every wine and limited production for each label, making their wines true gems: approachable on the palate, with a youthful image, always aiming to bring the world of wine closer to today’s younger generations. Very fruity, approachable, indulgent, and persistent wines. Hard to forget. Limited editions of between 1,000 and 13,000 bottles per year, depending on the label. Exclusive, original, and playful Mencía wines to dress your table for any occasion. We love Javier Alvarez’s philosophy of life, and his wines are simply part of our family.";}i:1;a:3:{s:5:"title";s:20:"Zoltan Nagy’s Opinion";s:2:"id";s:19:"opinion-zoltan-nagy";s:7:"content";s:624:" cblockquote e“To say Godello is for the soul to leap toward Aphrodisiaque” c/blockquote e cstrong eZoltan Nagy, c/strong e is a cem eWine Connaisseur c/em e who introduces us to many little-known corners of the Spanish wine world, still waiting to be widely discovered.
